First post of 2012! How old is this blog now anyway.

First off, I moved again again (second time in three months) and am likely going to move again again AGAIN in six months. I'm back home though, even if for a little while, I'll enjoy it while I can :) Second this means I'm going to try to wrap up my credits now because they ALWAYS give me headaches, and I've narrowed down what I want to to - biotech - so after receiving my associates this semester I'll work on finding a school and getting a BA of Science. :) At least in the meantime the AS will improve my job prospects.

So yeah! It will be nice to return to school instead of working full time :)

New Years Resolution! FINISH BLUEBLOODS.

My Christmas was wonderful and my New Years was hilarious.

And yeah. I'm working on many things. But I'm happy again.

Gonna try to make this easier on myself and others so that I can candidly tell people, "this is what I want, it costs xxx amount, now tell me what you want for that same price" or whatever. Cause it's nice to get something you actually want, and be able to gift something wanted as well - without unrealistic expectations or breaking the bank. Plus, guessing that the gift you've gotten for another didn't cost enough is the worst part of giving. I feel like shit when I spend $20 and get $80 in return.

I am cool with not receiving even one thing on this list (except for the boyfriend one). It's more of a "putting things in perspective" list than a "want want want!" list.

1. An evil eye ring. Best example. Price: $30
2. A night out/party dress. Best example. Price: $55 or even this one for... $85 -_-
3. A durable thick winter coat. Maybe something like this. Price: $80
4. Assassin's Creed: Revelations for PC. Price: $60
5. A Wacom Intuos tablet. Whahaha, not even gonna hope for this one.
6. To be with my boyfriend :( I want this one most of all. Priceless.

I think the most realistic one to ask for is the ring and maybe the dress or coat from my mom. IDK what to ask for from friends. Love and affection? I'm making them food if I can't find any material objects. Let's hope I'll have the time.

FUCK YEAH sorry I mean Charmander cake.

Going to make it. Apparently regular cake icing isn't the best for cheesecake - which I'm planning to make the design on - so I'll try strawberry preserve or jam for the orange/red and perhaps mango or orange jam for the yellow. I'll have to mix the jam with water (possibly syrup??) to make it more manageable and thin. As for the green of the eyes though... ugh... dyed whipped cream?? I'm not sure where to even begin with that. Cornstarch fruit glaze? Flavoured sour cream? I think I'm better off asking someone in person. I don't even know what to start with for the black outline. Maybe regular icing is alright for that tiny amount?

Not to mention that I'll have to find an ungarnished and not decorated cheesecake to start with. I've never made one and I don't want to spend all day finding out that oh hey, I suck at making cheesecake, and I haven't even started decorating the charmander yet. Sorry, but I don't live in my kitchen. I am a terrible housewife.

Original Characters Compendium

A list with descriptions and references of my original characters that I'm working into a story. It's set in a mostly medieval time period but with influences from all of America, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

In no order: Nature, Morbie, Malic, Demeter, Eryth, Ragnhild, and Bai Li.

NATURE
A beautiful and terrible buddha. She's an allegory of, um, nature. The metal spikes implanted in her exposed brain allude to the expanding threat of modern civilization. She is at times serene but can be provoked to great anger with little effort. She cares little for others, helping them only when it keeps the balance of the planet and prefers the presence of animals to humans. You will rarely see her outside her enlightened (six armed) form. As a buddha, she can control the forces of the earth at will.

Physique: Curvy!

Clothing: Barely matters. If she wears any at all, it would be animal furs and hides, feathers, or Native American/African inspired. Usually orange, green, and sharp reds.

Weapons: Bow and arrow and/or jagged metal whip.

Enlightened and angry

MORBIE
A bodhisattva (buddha who seeks enlightenment for the purpose to help others), Morbie has a quiet but self-assured nature. Morbie is an allegory of the universe (hence the six eyes) and can alter time and space. She was much more uncertain and shy before reaching Nirvana. Her enlightened form is only slightly more aggressive than her passive, human form. Her likes and dislikes are unknown (except she likes the color purple). When passive, she poses as an acolyte at a much lower level of buddhahood than she really is.

Physique: Standard. Not too thin, not too thick.

Weapons: A strange double-sided blade. I made up a name for it, but completely forgot :)

Clothing: WHEN ENLIGHTENED: If any, her legs and two of her six arms have long blue gloves/tights, her waist is adorned with jewels, and there are rings in her hair. WHEN PASSIVE: acolyte garb (plain white smock (SEE CLOTHING MEME)). During her past lives, before her quest for buddhahood, her hair was often long and left down. This is unimportant.

*The eyes are not static. They can move fluidly to anywhere on her body.

MALIC
A normal human male born to the chieftess Ragnhild of a tribe of Scandinavian/Nordic-inspired warrior women. Always excluded and shunned by most of the tribe, he was raised as a scholar (since the role of warrior is exclusively for women) and is used to adventuring alone. Nonetheless he is good with a double-sided blade like the one Morbie wields. Malic likes talking, joking, exploring, and learning.

Physique: Slim but built.

Weapons: Double-sided blade.

Clothing: Varies, see examples. A mix of Gaelic and Roman influences.

His hair is usually scruffy and bothers everyone but him. Beard optional.

Younger Malic

DEMETER
A pretty girl from a boring village. She is at first a pacifist and her only talents are domestic, however, she is a good songstress. Demeter eventually begins to wield a ball and chain to defend herself after an assault which broke her arm. Malic's mother Ragnhild at first despises her and her domestic female tendencies, but trains her in the ways of battle. She joins the royal army and becomes a high-ranking commander.

Physique: Well-proportioned. Standard.

Clothing: Simple pretty dresses. Eventually she dons armor.

Weapons: A ball-and-chain.

Her arm has the tendency to be bitten off.

RAGNHILD
Malic's mother, chief of his tribe. She is very masculine in her personality and behaviour but resists the custom of her tribe to banish all males and raises Malic anyway. Ragnhild was previously named Yrgi ("George"). Her affection for her son rarely shows, but it's there.

Physique: Muscular.

Clothing: A mix of Viking, Gaelic druid, Roman, and Valkyrie influences. Usually sports armor and long skirts, a fur capelet, and twigs and flowers in her hair.

Weapons: Two swords.

ERYTH THE WHITE KNIGHT
An allegory of erythrocytes (white blood cells). Her hair is adorned with flowers and her face is hidden by a six-slitted mask, resembling the eyes of buddhas. The similarities are unclear.

Physique: Muscular.

Clothing: Armor.

Weapons: A long sword.

BAI LI
An acolyte like Morbie, however only his third eye is open. He is a warrior monk who wields choa (or chui), double melon hammers. He is very stoic, serious, and silent. He had a male lover who passed away and he's never engaged in a relationship since.

Physique: Very muscular.

Clothing: Simple monk garb, maybe some talismans and beads.

Weapons: Double melon hammers.

A note on Nirvana: the process of reaching enlightenment requires living many lives as "tests" and surpassing each one. One key to truth (represented as an eye) is opened for each test. Non-enlightened beings naturally have two eyes, and an initiate has three. The sixth eye is the hardest of all to attain. How an individual finds truth is up to them - there is no one single path.

Had my first night shift... wasn't bad until morning (5 am ish) when people start piling in and things start going wrong (no change! no food ready! oh you changed your mind and don't want a breakfast sandwich? let me cash that out and void the order and START ALL OVER AGAIN, thank you SO MUCH FOR YOUR BUSINESS). But until then... I liked it. Went to bed at eight, woke up at three, and I've been disgruntled ever since.

Trying to read up on some art books and tutorials to get page 6 of Bluebloods looking manageable. It's... not happening. So here's a yesterday doodle.

I just feel like that's an apt description of myself. You don't understand how badly I mutilate you in my mind while smiling at you :)

This article. So much. It's completely true for me. Growing up most of my friends were guys and the few female friends I had were either a little weird like me or boyish in some way. I never wore skirts and black was a constant. I was just brainwashed into this whole "girl stuff isn't cool" mentality. Looking back, I have no idea why, but it's utterly stupid. Fuck yeah I like pretty dresses, hello kitty, jewelry, and flowers. I like cute animals. I like cleanliness. I like (looking at, not wearing) fashion.

I don't know why I was ever ashamed of it. I think girls, being the crueler of the genders, tend to hate girls easily. Like, "At least I'm not the slut wearing a miniskirt!" kind of thing. Or "I'm cooler because I play Street Fighter and don't go shopping as a past-time!". I've seen a lot of girls doing this.

Street Fighter is fucking stupid. A girl isn't a slut just because she wears a miniskirt.

I'm glad I've changed.

Because of the way I was raised I like to think that I did at least one useful thing a day, more if possible. A day wasted lying around is just unappealing to me (though there's a huge difference when it's hanging with friends - then it counts as relaxing and boosting mental health. Yes, I actually think like this. "Oh, I'm eating an apple. Good, I need the antioxidants and the teeth cleaning."). Anyway, so, I've been moving along.

I walked for over two hours today - again - to drop off a resume to a place which, as it turns out, opened much later. And it's thanksgiving weekend in Canada, so I guess I'll have to do it all over again on Tuesday. But again, the agony of the walk + heat made me feel good about the exercise I was getting. I can't deny that I'm bummed about not having a job yet, despite the many, many applications I've done and the many near-hits. I'm trying not to let it affect me and my self-esteem, but... I really need a job. I have absolutely no money to my name. It's ridiculous. If my mother died tomorrow, I would be on the streets. I am incapable of being independent, despite my struggles and wishes.

The animation studio (no longer working on Redwall) stuff hasn't really started yet (I'm only a matte painter now, thank god, I can't handle character design this time around) so there's no pressure there, for now.

I've still got plans for webdesign and art... I'm just going to let the webdesign part sit for a bit. I know, I know. Artwise, I want to make a character line-up of my OCs. I'd like to work on their story once I'm done with Disarm and Bluebloods.

House Of Leaves

Spoilers abound. I don't even care.

Mostly I liked it, but of course it demands some thought. The sex bits I thought were unnecessary, but I guess that's how you write "modern"... actually, I see MZD shouting for Stephen King's* attention, and King's guilty of the same thing. Pointless, horribly missplaced sex scenes.

What I still don't get is the fictional/not-fictional aspects of the book. I definitely need to reread it to better understand, but I don't have time for that. Anyway, some questions to help clear my mind:

1) Redwood? Mentioned twice.
2) The house is fictional in Zampano's universe. Is it real in Johnny's? (he never finds the house.) Actually, I don't even get the "universe" bits, except that some things exist in some places and not in others. Somewhere online someone mentioned that there was "proof" of Zampano's interviews that are revealed by Johnny to have never happened.
2.5) if it's fake in Zampano's, then why did he succumb to madness/die the way he did/have claw marks on his floor? The whole thing screams "MINOTAUR!". But Zampano himself wrote that the house wasn't real. And then he said to avoid it. Um...
3) Johnny's mother addressed Zampano in a letter to Johnny.**
4) The house of leaves was a book that Navidson burned while falling through the house of leaves, saving him from death (or maybe that's what allowed Karen to go in and save him)...
5) The final bits of Exploration 5 mention that, after the rescue, Karen and Navidson were sitting simply outside. Like, transported there. One second in the total dark, next: outside. The house was gone. But a neighbour called an ambulance, whose driver saw the house (albeit with an angry door).
6) The house has mood swings (suddenly violent because of Holloway's suicide?) and weird affection for Navidson (the house calms when he enters it... but it still tries to lead him in further [exploration 5 mentions the floor slopes downward] and kill him).
7) The house is the book, pretty much. Yes, in canon. Zampano's manuscript was supposed to be called "House of Leaves", Johnny goes nuts editing it, and Navidson burns it and is consequently saved. PS, wtf did Johnny even do with it? He mentions being evicted, and later meeting a band who had read the book - but nowhere did Johnny mention parting with the book/notes or any publisher/editor/whatever.
8) The house has reach. Anyone remotely connected is affected, and Johnny is outright attacked in the supply room at work. He hallucinates the dark monster, but has scratches on his neck. Of course, who knows if we can believe anything he says. We can assume the Minotaur/house "moved" and also killed Zampano.

Okay, you know what? MZD's clearly just fucking with us. None of this is SUPPOSED to make sense, and that makes me angry. So many loose ends. So many "it depends on your interpretations!" bullshit. It's interesting, yes, but full of dead ends.

*Found one Stephen King easter egg: "teeth rose .... madder". I'm sure there's more.

** This is where MZD clearly stopped trying to make things make sense, and just wanted to fuck with us. I honestly believe there's no point or meaning to this, just that MZD wanted to freak the reader out and think there was something.

You know what? I've found enough loose ends to feel content saying, this shit's not supposed to make sense so I'm not gonna waste my time.

So my portfolio is done - took ages cause a) simpleviewer is, in fact, a bitch, and so b) once I realized I had wasted too much time I had to use another gallery script, Litebox, which is fantastic but requires manual set up of the gallery. So yeah. I cheated though, by using simpleviewer to create thumbails for me :D But even with that it still took a while. And then c) I decided why not include some sketches and comics, too.

The webdesign section is lonely though. Gotta make more websites. AUGH~

I want to draw, but I'm afraid to. Gonna try it after I finish the second design.

Change Of Plans

I'm not going to school this semester. Instead, working (full-time hopefully, otherwise just PT) and freelancing on the side. I'm getting back into webdesign, it seems! And I'm going to try to sell my art more, too.

I already have an interview :) It's not for a shitty job either so I'm pretty content.

Right now I have an idea for a design I want for my portfolio. Deviantart's "templates" for the portfolio option sucks, but I didn't have the patience to design & code something for myself. Same with this blog - I like working on things from scratch, for myself; but if it's just "make a design and spend the next three hours trying to jam this code in" then it's no fun. ...Anyway, I might end up actually designing my own goddamn blog, too. I've never been able to find a template I actually loved. This one included.

But I've been away for so long that I'm excited by freebies :) Textures! Vectors! FONTS! Things you collect obsessively knowing you'll probably only use 13% of them -- whatever! It's great!

LIFE ALERT! PUNCH IN THE FACE!

Well wow that was rough.

Moved countries... got a new place... trying to get a new school*, trying to get a job... I've applied for so many things and am trying to pimp myself out for tutoring** and freelance artsy work... signed up for a family doctor, opened a bank account... I'm so pro-active, I'm scaring myself. Guess it makes a difference to be in a country where I actually have rights. You're decent, USA, but at least I can work here. At go to a hospital if I get my face mashed in.

It's the start of the week so it's too early for much of anything to come to fruition, but I've been aggressively getting things done since my first day back in Canada, so for me it feels like I've been waiting forever. I'm still waiting for my cheques and credit card. WORK FASTER, BANK. What? National holiday? THIS IS MY CARING FACE -------> =(

I switched majors, too, because everything was taken at the school I applied to. It's the most random goddamn thing, too, and that sucks because I've decided I really want to do biotech. :( I want to play God in a laboratory damn it! I love microbiology <3 <3 <3 But at the point I'm at, I know that my random-ass transcripts aren't my fault and will probs require me to take summer classes or even a fifth year to finish a Bachelor's degree in Biotech. I've come to terms with it. Life's not going to stop sucking anytime soon.

But... boyfriendface came up to visit for two days and it was amazing. Casino, night club, ribfest, pubs, hotel... we had a damn good time. Ilubb :)

And I discovered Alex Clare :D "Relax My Beloved", "Up All Night", "When Doves Cry", and "Sanctuary" are my recs. And I've been easing off of Ellie Goulding and Florence + The Machine (thank god). Plus, I got the entire White Stripes discography, so even though I had only ever listened to Icky Thump previously, I might give the rest of it a go soon.

Don't get me wrong though... I'm sad beyond all hell to leave NH... I miss a lot of people already. It was a really great place. But I was a prisoner there: couldn't work, couldn't drive, couldn't live without depending on others. Still... I really miss boyfriendface. Hopefully I'll see him soon.

* It's a disaster. There's a province-wide strike of support staff and guess who's responsible for my fee invoice? YEAH. Can't get my classes until I pay that, but oh dear, it's the first day of classes and it's still not here ~ <3. How magical. Fuck my life.

I was stuck on a ridiculously terrible road trip in +100 degree F weather. I did have lots of fashion magazines to keep me entertained, though (mostly cause they were free, HA HA HA, like I would pay to feel bad about myself, come on). Anyway, I like fashion, when it's not ridiculous and dumb-lookin - oh sorry, I mean PROGRESSIVE and EDGY. Whatever, you're still wearing a cone on your head, and I'm not laughing *with* you. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, it's not all bad. There were some pics I really really liked. So I'm thinking of starting a series of monster models like those above. Except they won't be cut off and stupid-looking (my first try at gouache!). But yeah, we'll see how that goes.

Permanent WIP. Angela as a Magus. I'm really close to beating the game again (like Last Boss close) and Angela's just such a badass. Well, in my game she's a Grand Divina, so she's more of a... holy babe, but she kicks ass in any class. Ha.

MALIC'S MOM! Hahaha. This woman is so badass, she goes to sleep in her armour. Instead of "wake up honey I made breakfast" she rouses the camp with a blood curling battle cry, then serves everyone mead and eggs. Like all mothers should. Yrgi is where Malic gets his manliness from. Yes, you heard right.

The outfit, videogame influence aside, is also influenced by Valkyries, shieldmaidens, Gaelic druids, and some Roman chest plates maybe. I love the clash of fur + metal, nature + technology, peace + war aspects, personally. The twigs and branches in her hair are also supposed to resemble the winged helmets from Valkyries of Norse legend. The feet are the sheet metal silliness worn by medieval knights. And the tassels are... tassels. I don't know what's up with me and tassels lately, I blame anything but me.

Not sure about her name though. She's named after my grandfather. Unfornately google does not know enough about Czech Republic/Slovakia to tell me if it's solely a man's name or not. OH WELL I'm sure someone somewhere on the internet will tell me.

Since I'm finding out all sorts of great informative sites, I thought I'd list them here, since my own bookmarks tend to be disgustingly messy - I'd probably never find them again if I left them there.

Cartoon Construction - short but helpful notes on the construction of body types.

What is the purpose of the blue pencil? I've found that it does help to draw the rough sketches in blue so that the darker (black) lines on top show better, letting the viewer glimpse both the construction and the details.

What's Wrong With Your Storyboards.

Simba Head Construction, a great example of an in-depth construction sheet.

Squash and Stretch, something I need to keep in mind while making my own character sheets. From the same book by Preston Blair (animator for Disney), Head Construction.

John K's Animation School - unfortunately, while the "school" itself is instructive, this blog sucks at navigation skills. The only way to get around is to use the lesson listing as a hub. Good notes for amateur animation, though.

The Last Story designs - examples of character sheets that, though stylistically pleasing, aren't very informative. Cool to look at though.
